The apsidal motion test of stellar structure in relativistic systems

چکیده
We have compared observational data of apsidal motion rates for relativistic eclipsing binaries with theoretical predictions based on stellar theoretical models. Ten double-lined eclipsing binaries with high quality light curves and radial velocities were selected. The analysis of the data available indicate that the predictions by the General Relativity and the new stellar models are able to explain the shift in the periastron position. The two versions of the non-symmetrical theory of gravitation were also investigated. The early version of this theory (1984) is not supported when contrasted with recent observational data since it predicts too slow apsidal motion rates. The more recent version (1989) presents several problems in its formulation, like too many degrees of freedom and some parameters for which there is no severe physical constraint. Moreover, such a theory is not able to predict a priori the apsidal motion rates.

Some notes on the relativistic apsidal motion of DI Herculis
DI Her is a double-lined eclipsing binary presenting a very slow apsidal motion for which the relativistic contribution is of the order of the newtonian one. The observed apsidal motion is around 4 times that predicted by stellar evolutionary models and by General Relativity. This trend is known for non-relativistic systems although in a minor scale. The magnitude of such a disagreement led som...
متن کاملRelativistic Stellar Models with Quadratic Equation of State
In this paper, we have obtained and presented new relativistic stellar configurations considering an anisotropic fluid distribution with a charge distribution and a gravitational potential Z(x) that depends on an adjustable parameter. The quadratic equation of state based on Feroze and Siddiqui viewpoint is used for the matter distribution. The new solutions can be written in terms of elementar...
متن کاملOn the Validity of the Classical Apsidal Motion Formula for Tidal Distortion
We check the validity of the widely used classical apsidal motion formula as a function of orbital parameters, stellar structure, and stellar rotation rate by comparing dynamical calculations of the periastron advance with the static tidal formula. We nd that the classical formula gives very accurate results when the periods of the low order quadrupole g, f and p modes are smaller than the peri...
متن کاملApsidal Motion Equations Questioned Through Application of Dimensional Analysis
By using the IS units and applying the dimensional analysis to the apsidal motion equations, we show more conclusively that their current formulation in astronomy and astrophysics is conceptually, mathematically and physically incorrect and highly questionable since it was erroneously used in several research articles. Consequently, we cannot use these apsidal motion equations, at least in thei...
متن کاملStudies on stellar rotation I. The theoretical apsidal motion for evolved rotating stars
The quasi-spherical approximation, with some modifications, was implemented in our stellar evolution code to take into account the effect of rotation on the internal structure of the stars and, in particular, on the apsidal motion constant. Three models with masses 2, 7 and 15 M were used since they are representative of the mass range where apsidal motion is detected in binary stars. We adopte...
